"My name is Amber Button. I am a digital designer, a mixed media artist, and a graphic design student. Jane Davenport was a guest teacher on Lifebook for several years and I have always loved her lessons. Not only is she an amazing instructor but such a fun and vibrant person which comes through in every video. I have also purchased several of her cloth paper scissors lessons and have never been dissapointed. There is such elegance and whimsy to her art that her characters seem to dance off the page. I purchased "Beautiful Faces" recently and took is camping with me. I have created over 20 faces inspired by her lessons and learned so much about my own art supplies that I never would have known. It also inspired me to purchase Prismacolor colored pencils, a sharpie pen, and Ceramacoat and Andrionack matte paints. I never would have purchased these items had it not been for the book, she's quite the enabler but now I couldn't imagine not having these products. The book even inspired my hubby to try drawing some beautiful faces. We purchased some Copic markers for the both of us and have fun drawing together. All of this is thanks to Jane! I am currently saving penny after penny to join some of her online workshops. WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY! One last thing, if elegant, somewhat realistic faces are not your thing, or you've never drawn faces before, do not fret, this book is still for you. Jane teaches step by step the fundamentals of drawing a face in so many different ways using so many different materials that this book is for EVERYONE! Attached is a photo of a watercolor face I painted inspired by the book. I had never done a watercolor face or such a realistic face before."

Drawing and Painting Beautiful Faces A MixedMedia Portrait Workshop Jane Davenport 9781592539864 Books Reviews

  • I have never drawn a face before, I mainly work in 3-D but this book changed all that!
I highly recommend this book even if you have never drawn a face before, here is one
just after a few weeks of practice.
  • Jane Davenport never disappoints. I've taken a couple of her online workshops and I've admired her for years, so when she came out with this book I scooped it right away. I'm not sure what took me so long to review it, I don't normally review books. This one was excellent. It's a great "taste" of Jane. If you enjoy this I highly reccomend her workshops. She is wonderful at making even the least creative person suddenly drip with inspiration and "rainbowitis" )
  • I am SOOOOO glad I purchased this book!
I was not that familiar with Ms. Davenport's art but I love mixed media and portraits in particular, so I was drawn to this, like a magnet. After the first few pages I knew I would not be disappointed, and after pouring halfway through I had to stop and not finish the book. I needed to savor it, make it last, and I didn't want to bear the sadness of getting to the last page! Seriously, This is That GOOD!
Not only is the art work pure eye candy, but the instructions are spot on, clear, and presented in a fresh, easy breezy way. I was given a renewed sense of confidence and a gentle kick in the can, to start new projects, and to revisit ones that I had abandoned. The content was gentle enough for a beginner, yet challenging enough that one would not soon outgrow the techniques.
It would have been even farther out of this world to see more on backgrounds, and also figures....but this book fully delivered on it's promise, "Beautiful Faces". Perhaps more books in the future??
Thank you Jane Davenport for your vision and your generous heart to share it with all.

  • I love this book. It is filled with Jane Davenport's signature whimsical girls, but more importantly it's also filled with fantastic step by step instructions on how to draw and paint your own. It has been a useful tool for creating my own whimsical faces and I can see myself coming back to this book often for inspiration.
  • I have a confession. I was horrible at drawing faces on my fashion sketches. For decadesI just left them blank. And, by the way, I'm a fashion designer who went to FIT! I could render clothing but fine but felt so lacking because of my faceless sketches. Honestly, illustrative sketches are the smallest part of the job. The reality is technical sketches are what really are used. Sketches just get the overall ideas at the beginning of each season.

This void in my skills really bothered me. My brain couldn't make the leap from the fine art, highly detailed, life drawing I knew to the mere suggestion of faces used in fashion sketches. I tried book after book to teach myself.

I came across Jane Davenport's fanciful illustrations on YouTube. I also learned that she started out in fashion illustration. After watching more than a few videos I decided to get this book. From the first excercise, I was able to master the skills that eluded me! Her lessons include step by step technical instruction and brilliant advice on how to loosen up and go with the flow. Granted, I have years of sketching behind me, so some hand/eye coordination and skill came back to me but the improvement has been incredible.

I can't thank Jane Davenport enough. She isn't just an extremely talent artist, she is a great and thoughtful teacher as well. Seriously, my professor at FIT told me I needed to "Run through the streets of New York naked," to loosen up! What I really needed was to do through Jane's exercises over and over as just as she explains.

I can't explain how liberating this has been. I do love art journaling, playing with different materials and just playing. I can't wait to complete my journey through the rest of this beautiful book.
  • This book is great - not a quick flick, but an ongoing reference which has helped me understand more about drawing portraits with my own unique style. The shading templates are particularly helpful as I refer to them when drawing faces so I can create depth and 3D suggestion. The instructions are very detailed and there are loads of step by step photos of the processes. I'm doing things in my sketchbook I never thought I would! I'm using materials I had unopened for ages! And I'm trying out new techniques and am so surprised and happy with how my drawing and painting is rapidly progressing.
